About East Howard Union Cemetery Gatehouse
Year Established: 1859
Located at the main entrance to Union Cemetery, this distinctive structure on Howard Street carries a history wrapped in local legend and architectural charm.
Some historians believe the building once served as a law office for Governor Andrew Gregg Curtin, possibly relocated from the Crider Exchange Block on North Allegheny Street. Others assert it was constructed in 1859 as the original gatehouse for Union Cemetery, serving as the residence of the cemetery superintendent.
While its exact origin remains debated, what’s certain is the building’s unique architectural presence. The front-facing gables, adorned with downward-pointing decorative trim, are hallmark features of the Folk Victorian style, lending the small structure a sense of quiet elegance as it welcomes visitors to one of Bellefonte’s most historic resting places.
