About Charles McCafferty House
Year Established: 1883
This Folk Victorian home was built in 1883 as the personal residence of Charles McCafferty, Bellefonte’s most prolific late 19th-century builder. McCafferty was responsible for many of the grand homes and commercial buildings throughout town, particularly along Linn and Curtin Streets.
His early success was partly rooted in his first marriage—his wife was the daughter of James Williams, a descendant of James Harris and Ann Dunlop, founders of Bellefonte. In the late 1800s, the Harris family still held undeveloped land in the area and entrusted McCafferty with its development, further cementing his influence on the town’s architectural landscape.
McCafferty lived in the home until 1887, after which it served as his professional office for nearly thirty years. Later, the house was restored as a bed and breakfast, before being thoughtfully converted back into a private residence—a reflection of Bellefonte’s evolving approach to preservation and adaptive reuse.
