About Bellefonte Hospital
Year Established: 1902
Bellefonte’s first hospital was founded here in 1902 by a small group of dedicated local physicians, including Dr. James Seibert and Dr. Thomas Hayes—whose homes are also featured earlier in this tour. The original facility began modestly, with just six beds, but it marked the beginning of a vital chapter in the region’s medical history.
Over more than a century, and through several name changes, that small hospital has grown into what is now the Mount Nittany Medical Center—a modern, 260-bed acute care facility offering medical, surgical, diagnostic, and community services. The Bellefonte location has evolved into the Willowbank branch, continuing to serve residents with compassion and advanced care.
Today, both the original hospital building at 113 South Spring Street and the carriage house behind it have been carefully restored, preserving the legacy of healthcare in Bellefonte while honoring the vision of its early founders.
