William Lonberger Steele, who is noted as a carpenter by trade on the deed of purchase for the land at 311 South Spring Street, likely served as the contractor for his own home. Upon his death, his obituary notes that he was responsible for aquite a number of Bellefonteas best buildings, monuments of his skill and efficiency.a The structure is very representative of the late Victorian Queen Anne style seen in so many locations, even though in this case, salvaged building materials appear to have been added to the porch and exterior to add interest. John McCargar, who purchased the property in 1919 may have been responsible for the garage construction as well as the changes in porch design.
