Originally built for the manager of the Berwind-White Coal Company Snow Shoe Works, the property at 337 East Curtin has an absolutely fascinating history. William Nichols was an author who developed authoritative mining treatises as well as two novels, including aThe Daughters of Suffolka a historical romance about Lady Jane Gray, Englandas nine day queen. Architect Minerva Parker Nichols was one of the few woman architects to practice in the 19th century. She later submitted an award winning design for the Queen Isabella Pavilion at the Columbian Exposition in 1892. The house was also the setting for aThe House on Curtin Street,a a fictionalized account of the construction of the house written by Millie Ragosta, who lived in the house between 1976 and 1983, and published by Doubleday.
