The Linn House was built by General Philip Benner, the pioneer ironmaster of Centre County, for Judge Jonathan Walker to convince him to stay in frontier Bellefonte when he had many other offers for Federal court positions. The property now houses the Bellefonte Art Museum of Centre County. The structure was also home to Judge Charles Houston, Pennsylvania Governor James Beaver, as a young man, and historian John Blair Linn, author of Linn’s History of Centre and Clinton Counties, who moved into the house when he married Benner’s granddaughter. The quality of the Trenton limestone, only one of the excellent building materials found in the Bellefonte area, gave rise to a major industry that has sustained to today. The interior elements of the house have been preserved as much as possible to display the authentic Georgian architecture of the period.
