The property at 191 East Curtin is one of the many homes designed and built by famed Bellefonte architect Robert Cole, who was responsible for most of the commercial buildings of the era in Belle-fonte. Designed with wood paneled ceilings, stained glass windows and spectacular chandeliers, this home was built for Samuel Shaffer, who served as the superintendent of an area lime and stone company and as an Elder of the Presbyterian Church. The enormous front porch was common in the late Victorian era, enabling residents to sit on their front porch to become a part of the street community on which they lived.
