The residence at 401 East Howard Street represents a different type of architecture than many of the larger residences in Bellefonte historic neighborhoods. The simpler, less ornate property is a very good example of the tasteful Victorian ornamentation that was used on homes of the less affluent. There is speculation that the property could have originally been constructed as tenant housing. Owner Samuel Vonada, a delivery wagon driver for the Bellefonte Lumber Company and employee of the Ardell Lumber Company, took over ownership of the house in 1895, the height of Victorian prosperity in Bellefonte.
