Both Mr. Lyon and his wife Annie were descendants of prominent Bellefonte ironmasters: S. Stewart Lyon was the son of John Lyon, founder of Lyon, Shorb and Company rolling mill established in 1825 on the Monongahela River across from Pittsburgh, and Annie, the daughter of Abraham Valentine, who invented the first iron ore washer which greatly decreased the time and expense of processing iron ore before smelting. Records show that the home was actually built by her brother Bond Valentine. Mr. Lyon was elected Burgess of Bellefonte in 1877, a position the equivalent of todayas title of Mayor. After Annieas death, the house passed to William Burnside, who had married into the Valentine family and then to John Porter Lyon, whose descendants owned it until it was pur-chased by Counseling Service, Inc, as the location of its counseling practice.
