Now leaving the State College area for the remainder of the driving tour, your first stop is the Pennsylvania Furnace, built by Lyons, Shorb and Co, which went into blast in 1810 and continued until 1888. The company held vast landholdings in both Ferguson Township and nearby Huntingdon County, with the stack located on approximately the county line. While little remains of the stack area, which sits right on the county line, and the village that surrounded the iron plantation, the ironmastera s mansion, also known as Lyon Mansion, serves as a prominent reminder of the importance of this industry to central Pennsylvania. The house, built in 1834 and located just over the line in Huntingdon County, has a 2 A1/2 story section, a 3 A1/2 story section and a 4 story section constructed from a combination of limestone and frame.
