Captain Joseph Miles, ironmaster, co-founder of Milesburg, and founding stockholder, teller and bookkeeper of the Centre Bank of Pennsylvania, constructed this home diagonally across from the bank he organized. Captain Miles sold the house to William Wilson Potter, a distinguished lawyer and US Congressmen, in 1830. Upon Potter’s sudden death, his widow invited her niece, Lucy Alex-ander Humes and her husband to make their home with her. Humes later founded the private banking firm of Humes, McAllister, Hale & Co, which ultimately became the First National Bank of Belle-fonte. Their son, William Potter Humes continued with First National Bank for 36 years. The last Humes survivor bequeathed the house for purposes of a community library. In 1938, the Library Association of Centre County was given title to the building.
