Real estate, especially rental property, has always been considered a good investment, which led the Presbyterian Church to commission the building of 137 West Curtin as a source of income for Widow Mary Stuart Steele Gordon. James Dunlop, direct ancestor of Mrs. Gordon had included a plot for the church in the original town plan and family members had contributed a great deal to the church over the years. This left the church feeling obligated to look after the well being of Mrs. Gordon when she was widowed. After she passed away, the property was owned by retired Civil War officer John Irvin Curtin and Jesse Stutzman, a warden at the Rockview Prison outside Bellefonte. The current owners have returned the house to a family home, restored the interior architectural elements and furnished the house with interesting antiques and family pieces
