The home which John R. Ardell Jr., the principal lumber baron of the Black Moshannan area built for himself in Bellefonte which also served as the headquarters of all his business operations, reflects his total immersion in the lumbering industry. It also showcases the locally produced architectural elements which his company sold. His Starr Mill, staffed by as many as 300 men, located in what is now Black Moshannon State Park, had the capacity to produce 4 million board feet of lumber a year. The opulent details in the interior of the residence, including curved doors with stained glass panels, arched doors and massive fireplaces have all been retained through several restorations. The current owners met when Mrs. Schuster was playing Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and her husband was involved in making the sets for the production.
