J. H Lingle built his house at 204 West Linn before he partnered with W. R. Jenkins, John P. Harris, Judge Ellis Orvis, and J. L. Montgomery to form the Bellefonte Power and Hammer Company, an expansion of the original foundry and machine shop he owned between Lamb and High Streets. The company upgraded the then abandoned Bellefonte Car Works, demolishing some of the existing buildings, enlarging others and constructing selected new facilities, to house an operation which employed 25 men by 1904. Under Lingleas leadership, the company invented square stroke hammers, which were a big improvement over older style hammers used in the iron industry, enabling the company to thrive for several years.
