Hastings Mansion was the residence of Governor Daniel H. Hastings who served Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1898. Contrary to popular opinion that Hastings constructed the mansion around the 1830 Red Lion Inn, the Inn was not located in the same position on the property. Hastings Mansion was originally constructed for John Lane. After buying the property, when the old capitol building in Harrisburg burned 1897, Hastings began restoring his property to resemble the lost building, with the south wing, portico, windows, bracketing, pilasters and pediment doors fashioned after that structure. Today, even though the building how houses eight different apartments, spirits are still said to roam the halls and the old grandfather clock built with a realistic human face that was said to wink, lives on in legend.
