James Harris, of Harris and Potter Hardware, was the grandson of Bellefonte founder, James Harris. His wife, Lavinia Catherine Slaymaker, had come to Bellefonte three years earlier, to take over the private school started by Mrs. Rueben Valentine. They lived next door while the property was being completed. Since the Harrisa had no children, the home descended to cousins Anna H. Hoy, Agnes L. Orbison, and Eleanor T. O. Beach. Between the years 1921 to 1946, the property was owned by Dr. Nissly, who implemented the first series of architectural changes. The Gryctkos purchased the home in 1946 and dramatically altered the property in 1948, gutting the original duplex configuration, creating four apartments and changing the exterior to its present day appearance.
