Daniel Bush, very much a self-made man arrived in Bellefonte in 1856 at age 30 to complete his preparation for the Bar after having overcome a childhood of adversity and poverty to obtain an education. His law practice with George Yocum in Bellefonte took in the young Daniel Hastings, who passed the bar without attending college and later became Governor of Pennsylvania. Instead of running for political office, after having been nominated multiple times, Bush spent his energy on constructing the Bush Arcade, the Bush House and several residences in Bellefonte, before erecting a block of three brick buildings known as the McClain Block. In addition to his own residence, Bush was involved in the construction of as many as sixty frame houses in Bellefonte.
