This particular Curtin residence was the home of Andrew Gregg Curtin who served as the first Republican Governor of Pennsylvania from 1861-1867, but may have been more famous in his era as the organizer of the famed aPennsylvania Reserves,a who saved the US Capitol from capture by Confederate troops following the first battle of Bull Run. He was a friend of President Abraham Lincoln and worked extensively for his election. After he returned to Bellefonte from Harrisburg, Curtin was involved in virtually every development of any significance in Bellefonte. The house is a superb example of Tuscan revival architecture, complete with bracketing. The front porch, added by the Elks who purchase the property in 1906, was constructed from piers of a viaduct that previously stood over Spring Creek.
