The residence here was the family home of Fountain Crider, who built the Crider Exchange block after a fire in 1888 destroyed a large portion of downtown. Rising from a poor country farm family, Crider graduated from business college and formed P.B. Crider and Son in 1866. The organization went on to become one of the most successful manufacturing businesses in central Pennsylvania. Operations in charcoal, timber lands, oil, gas, mining and lumbering headquartered in Bellefonte, encompassed five surrounding counties. Crider also became the president of banking firm Jackson, Crider and Hastings. The five bay Georgian revival residence, which had been turned into apart-ments, was restored back to a single family home.
