Charles McCafferty was well known in Bellefonte as the premier builder of many of the residences and commercial buildings, including a large number of the homes on Linn and Curtin Streets. Mr. McCafferty came into much of his own wealth and clientele through his first wife, who was the daughter of James Williams, a descendant of James Harris and Ann Dunlop. In the late 1800s, the Harris family still owned an undeveloped portion of Curtin and Linn streets, and charged Mr. McCaf-ferty with its development. The Folk Victorian house at 441 North Spring was building as his per-sonal residence where he lived from 1883 to 1887 and then used as an office building for nearly thirty more years. It was restored as a bed and breakfast before being transformed back into a family home.
